WEEE Recycling Statement
LabCrafter (operated by Embedded Loop Ltd) is registered as a producer of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) in the UK under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations 2013. This page explains what to do with your old electrical equipment when you no longer need it, including the free take-back service we offer to our customers.
Why old electrical equipment must be recycled separately
Electrical and electronic equipment can contain substances such as lead, mercury, cadmium and brominated flame retardants. If WEEE is sent to landfill or incinerated with general waste, these substances can leach into soil and groundwater, pollute the air, and harm people, wildlife and the wider environment.
Old equipment also contains valuable materials – metals, plastics, glass and electronic components – that can be recovered, reused or recycled into new products. Treating WEEE separately keeps hazardous substances out of the environment and keeps useful materials in circulation rather than being lost.
For these reasons, WEEE must not be placed in your normal household bin.
The crossed-out wheeled bin symbol
You will see this symbol on our products and on most other electrical equipment:

It means the item must not be disposed of as unsorted household waste. Instead, it should be taken to a designated WEEE collection point, returned to a retailer through a take-back arrangement, or sent back to us under the like-for-like take-back scheme described below.
Free take-back from LabCrafter
As an online distributor we offer free take-back of old equipment to private household customers on a one-for-one, like-for-like basis. The terms are:
- Like-for-like. When you buy a new product from us, you can return one old item of equivalent type and function. The old item can be any brand or model and you do not need to have originally purchased it from us.
- Free of charge. Take-back is free. Please contact us at info@labcrafter.co.uk within 28 days of receiving your new equipment and we will send you a prepaid postage label so you can return your old item to us at no cost.
- One for one. One new purchase entitles you to return one old item.
- Please contact us first. Do not send equipment back without arranging a prepaid label, as we cannot guarantee receipt of unlabelled returns.
Once we receive your old equipment we will reuse, refurbish or recycle it through appropriate channels so it does not end up in general waste.
Business, university and research customers
The like-for-like take-back service above applies to private household customers. If you bought from us as a business, university, school or other organisation, your purchase is treated as non-household EEE under the WEEE Regulations. End-of-life responsibility for non-household equipment may rest with us as the producer, or may have been transferred to you in writing at the point of sale.
If you have end-of-life equipment originally bought from us as a B2B customer, please contact us and we'll advise on the appropriate disposal route.
Other ways to recycle electrical equipment in the UK
If you don't have a new purchase from us to pair with the return, or you'd prefer to recycle locally, you can use any of the following:
- Your local Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC). Most accept small electrical equipment free of charge from householders. Find your nearest centre at gov.uk/recycling-collections.
- Recycle Your Electricals. A national tool that shows your nearest WEEE drop-off point: recycleyourelectricals.org.uk.
- Larger electrical retailers. Shops with an electrical sales area greater than 400 m² are required to accept small WEEE (under 25 cm on its longest side) free of charge, whether or not you bought the item from them.
If the equipment still works, please consider repair, resale or donation before recycling - community labs, schools and DIY-bio groups often make excellent use of second-hand scientific equipment.
